Sukkot, which is an eight day festival, begins on the 15th day of the Jewish Month of Tishrei. The holiday is also known as Feast of Booths, Feast of Tabernacles or just simply Tabernacles. This festival commemorates the forty years when the Jews wandered in the wilderness, after their release from Egypt on the way to Israel, where God protected them from the harsh desert conditions. The festival is celebrated in a sukkah, a temporary hut with the roof covering made from cut branches. On this holiday a special ritual of the four species, Arba’at Ha-minim, is observed as well. The four species include 1) Etrog, fruit from a citron tree 2) Lulav, fond from a date palm tree 3) Hadass, branches with leaves from a myrtle tree 4) Arava, branches with leaves from a willow tree. Each day (except Saturday) all species are waived together to illustrate that we unite all types of Jews in which every one of the different species presents. The seventh day is also known as Hoshanah Raba. This day is traditionally the final “stamp of judgment” following Rosh Hashanah & Yom Kipper. The 8th day (22 Tishrei) is a festival in its own right called Shemini Atzeres. The following day is Simchat Torah, rejoicing with the Torah, when the last Torah portion is read. This is a very joyous day for all ages with lots of singing and dancing.
