A gartel in Yiddish, or hagurah in Hebrew, is a ritual belt and religious accessory that is donned before praying or other religious ceremonies. Typically worn by Chassidim, the length is usually sufficient to be wrapped around oneself several times. While the standard color is black, white can be worn on special occasions such as Yom Kipper and to match a kittel. The thickness of the gartel varies depending how many strings it is comprised of. The two styles are round and flat.
