Lighting memorial candles for the remembrance for the soul of a loved one, is an accepted and common practice among Jews. The origin of this custom is based on the scripture where the soul is compared to a candle. The candle itself, in Hebrew referred to as ner nishamah and in Yiddish as yahrzeit licht, comes in varied styles. Typically, the candle is made to burn for 26 hours, which will allows the flame to continue to burn for the entire day, starting at nightfall, of the Hebrew day when it is customary to be lit. Among the days when a memorial candle is lit is the shiva mourning period, yahrzeits, the yearly day of death on the Hebrew calendar, days that the yizkor services are recited and before the onset of Yom Kipper. Candles are lit in homes as well as gravesites. Memorial candle holders are very popular given their distinct design and message as well as enhanced safety. There are those who opt to use electric powered candles due to safety concerns.
